Travel tip: Check your luggage to make sure it's in good shape before you leave on your trip. If you need new luggage, buy quality constructed bags.

• cell phone (activate your cell phone for use in Mexico before you leave)
• notebook computer, PDA, iPod (Mexico uses the same voltage as in the U.S.)
• books and/or magazines to read on the plane and beach
• digital camera or video camera with chargers, tapes, power cords
• notebook for taking notes
• english-to-spanish dictionary (start learning spanish now)

The supplemental list below is for families traveling to Mexico with babies and small children. I have been taking my children to Cabo every year since my eldest son was two months old, so I know what to bring. When I first was traveling to Mexico with children, there wasn't a great selection of baby items in Los Cabos. Although formula and disposable diapers are widely available now, I recommend you bring enough to last you for at least three days because it takes awhile to get situated and to the grocery store.

• car seat (if needed for the plane or if you plan to rent a car)
• folding playpen (call your hotel to find out if they can provide a playpen, high chair and crib)

• floaties for the pool
• waterproof cover for diapers in the pool
• bug spray (the sand fleas on the beach loved to bite my eldest child)
• kid movies for kids to watch on your notebook computer
