Swine Flu Cabo San Lucas: Is There Anything to Be Concerned About?
Concerned about the swine flu? Cabo San Lucas had a reported outbreak (there were about 400 cases in the entire state of Baja California Sur), but many of the residents down here (and I'm not just talking about people in the tourist business) feel that it was just another report that was blown out of proportion by the media. Some Los Cabos residents even think that it was a ploy by the government to distract the people while they ousted the head of the nationally owned power company. If right about now you're saying, "Huh?" don't ask. I didn't quite understand this conspiracy theory either. If you're coming to Baja California Sur, don't worry about the swine flu. Cabo San Lucas is just one of the many places that it has broken out in the world. The breakout here was small and was nothing like the breakout in the Ukraine. Although there were some cases here, it is under control at this time. You're probably much more likely to catch the virus at home or while riding public transportation than you are while vacationing on the Baja Peninsula. In fact, I'm vacationing in Cabo with my family right now and I haven't run into anyone with a fever, let alone a sniffle. There's no one with a hacking cough at the front desk of our hotel and I haven't witnessed anyone sneezing uncontrollably in the aisles at the local market. What you need to know about the H1N1 virus or swine flu is that the first time you get it, you will probably recover just fine. If you become sick again, you need to go to the doctor immediately and tell them to check your lungs for viral pneumonia. This is what people are actually dying from. This information comes first-hand from my mother who has been a nurse for almost 40 years and whose Los Angeles-based hospital has been the final resting place for a number of young and otherwise healthy patients.Although Mexican people take health issues particularly pandemics very seriously, the media hysteria about "Swine Flu: Cabo San Lucas" was so ridiculously over-the-top, that the people are even selling tee-shirts that say "I survived the Swine Flu virus in Cabo San Lucas" to make fun of it.
In other words, don't postpone your vacation due to reports about the swine flu. Cabo San Lucas seems to be perfectly safe as of this writing. Take it from someone who is writing this, while watching the Sea of Cortez surf break on Medano Beach. Of course, what I've also noticed is that due to all the recent scares about the swine flu virus, drug lords (who live in Sinoloa which is on the mainland and very far away from Los Cabos) and the depressed world economy, Los Cabos is like it was fifteen years ago ... much, much less crowded. This means that in some cases, bargains can be had and that it truly is a great time to travel to Los Cabos.
