Since some of the best surf spots are located within a 25 mile radius of the San Jose del Cabo airport, you can be out in the surf the day you arrive if you plan things right. Below is information on where to ride the best waves, with some tips on how to get there and where to stay.
Surfing Cabo San Lucas - Getting There from the Airport
Getting from the airport to the various surf spots is easy if you rent a car. Since taxis are expensive, it just makes sense. Rent your car before you go on your trip, so you eliminate any misunderstandings that can arise from dealing with someone who speaks a different language.
After twenty years of vacationing in Cabo San Lucas and renting cars from various rental car companies, our favorite places are Budget and Dollar due to full insurance coverage (which we highly recommend you get because in many cases, you will have to take the car off-road) and multiple locations (in case, you lock your keys in your car or have some other kind of problem.) Always inspect the car before you take it to note any pre-existing dents, dings or scratches. Consider renting a 4-wheel drive.
Surfing Cabo San Lucas - Hot Surf Spots
Whether you're traveling to Cabo San Lucas for a week or weekend surf trip, here are some things you'll need to know. Although the Pacific side of the Los Cabos area is known for its crashing waves and year-round surf, some of the most popular spots are on the Sea of Cortez side along the eastcape with the bigger waves occuring between July and October. Acapulquito - located on The Corridor (the stretch of land between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas just off Highway 1), breaks right, perfect for good to advanced surfers.
Bahia Chileno - breaks both ways on the beach. Fun, long ride. Not much of a wait.
Costa Azul is home to The Rock (or La Roca) and Zippers and is the closest to San Jose del Cabo and thus, the airport. The Rock is a slow, fun wave that breaks to the right. Advanced surfers only. Zippers Cabo is so named because it's a speedy wave with a hollow center that breaks hard to the right on the reefs and shore. Fun and fast, this is considered an expert wave, but is popular, so it can get pretty crowded.
El Tule - located in the Corridor, near Bahia Chileno. Strong wave that breaks both ways. Expert surfers only.
The Estuary - a heavy, hollow wave that breaks on the beach. Consistently inconsistent.
Shipwrecks - you'll need a 4-wheel drive to get there. Stunning coastal scenery makes the drive worthwhile. Located near a development called Rancho Rochas del Mar. Shipwrecks is quite famous, but is not crowed due to its inaccessibility. Best during a strong, southwest swell. Breaks right.
Nine Palms - beautiful, fun place to surf, long wave that breaks on the point near a cluster of palm trees.

Surfing Cabo San Lucas - Surfing in Todos Santos
La Pastora - close to Todos Santos (and the infamous Hotel California made famous by the Eagles' song by the same name). Must have a 4-wheel drive because parking is in the sand. Waves break both directions and due to inaccessibility, the surf is not crowded.
Pescadero - located south of Todos Santos at Km 60. Consistent, but reef is covered with spiny sea urchines. Beach side restaurant makes spending the day here fun, convenient and easy.
Playa Los Cerritos is located close to Todos Santos on the Pacific side off the Transpeninsular Hwy. This is a great wave for beginners. It's fast, breaks right with a nice beach break. A northwest swell makes it a lot more fun.
Todos Santos is about an hour long drive from Cabo San Lucas. We recommend you stay there to make a great overnight trip.
