Sea of Cortez Fishing - Fishing the Gulf of California
Sea of Cortez Fishing ... ... refers to great fishing spots along the East Cape of the Baja Sur peninsula. This finger shaped sea (also called the Gulf of California) is known to anglers as Marlin Alley, where you can catch striped and blue marlin as well as dorado, wahoo, sailfish and yellow fin tuna and many other species of fish. Fish the southern region of these prolific waters by chartering a boat in Cabo San Lucas or San Jose del Cabo.
Another option is to fish what some refer to as the Midriff Islands—a group of islands that dot the Sea of Cortez about 300 miles south of San Felipe all the way down to San Francisquito (Little San Francisco). Since these islands just happen to be situated along the migratory path of the yellow, the waters are teeming with fish. In addition to those listed above you can catch, black, white and pinto sea bass, giant squid and red snapper. Fishing excursions to the Midriff Islands are typically 4-5 day trips.
My son and I returning from our most recent fishing trip.Although these waters are best known for sport fishing, the area is also quickly becoming known as a haven for scuba divers and boating enthusiasts. Since it's also an area where grey whales migrate to breed, you just might be as lucky as we were on our last fishing trip and get what I call a 2-for-1: bountiful Sea of Cortez fishing along with the incredible sights of Baja whale watching.
