San Jose del Cabo: The Perfect Cabo San Lucas Day Trip
San Jose del Cabo is one of our family's favorite little day trips when vacationing in Cabo San Lucas. Less than an hour away, it's also where the airport is located. If you're confused about where SJC is located in relation to Cabo, take a look at our San Jose del Cabo map
Although San Jose has attracted many new coastal developments during the last twenty years, it has not enjoyed the explosive growth of the southern portion of Los Cabos, but with all the building we saw on our last trip, it's quickly catching up.
SJC exudes a quite charm with its quaint Spanish colonial style shops and sidewalk cafes and restaurants. It is a clean, upscale city full of hospitable people with a relaxed attitude toward life. Of course, SJC is much more than just a great place for a day trip, it's a beautiful city to vacation in. And if you're looking for a lovely San Jose del Cabo villa with extraordinary views of The Sea of Cortez, click on the link for our top recommendation.
When our family takes a side trip to San Jose, we usually spend the day browsing the small boutiques and art galleries and relaxing at one of the sidewalk cafes that dot the cobblestone sidewalk of Boulevard Mijares, the main thoroughfare. Be sure to bring along a camera because you'll find many interesting shots besides historic sites. For instance, below is a photo I snapped of an empty sidewalk cafe which I've framed and put on my wall at home. Whenever I want to instantly relax, I gaze at the photo and think of this memorable day in San Jose.
One historic site you'll want to see is the Church of St. Joseph at the center of town. Its spires can be viewed from virtually anywhere in the city, but its church bells peal only for special occasions. You can also get married in this church and have a traditional Catholic wedding. Over its entry, a tile mosaic depicts the Pericu Indians (the original inhabitants of the Baja Peninsula before the spanish invasion), dragging Father Nicolas Tamaral to his death. It is was the Pericu's final act of rebellion after Tamaral established a mission (with all its attendant violence and destruction of culture) in 1730.
Named for St. Joseph, San Jose is the center of the Los Cabos government. It also houses offices for tourism, commerce, fishing and agriculture.
If you plan to stay in San Jose del Cabo, there are many activities to enjoy, including golf (of course!), tennis, sport fishing, swimming, tours, shopping, horseback riding and even swimming with the dolphins.
