Panga Fishing Cabo San Lucas - Tips and Tricks You Need to Know

Panga Fishing Cabo San Lucas - there's nothing like a day spent fishing from a panga around Land's End in the sparkling turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez. In fact, many people travel to Cabo just for the sport fishing (and the other half come presumably for the golf).

Aside from being recognized as the Marlin Capital of the World, Los Cabos is a fishing hot spot because it is a fish trap for one of the most recently formed bodies of water in the world. Created about 15 million years ago by a violent earthquake which rumbled along the San Andreas Fault and broke off a long strip of land, later named the Baja Peninsula. The ocean rushed into to this deep crevass between the mainland and its pinky finger, creating a nutrient-dense habitat teeming with ocean life. panga fishing cabo

While panga fishing Cabo San Lucas is not likely to bring in a marlin (you'll need a cruiser for that), there are many smaller species you can catch. In fact, Cabo San Lucas is home to 650 species of marine life. Fish like dorado, yellowfin tuna, roosterfish and wahoo will get the angler in you all worked up.

Since panga fishing is less expensive than chartering a cruiser, you can relax, enjoy a beautiful day out on the ocean, reel in some nice-size fish and feel confident that you'll be bringing home dinner.

Panga Fishing Cabo San Lucas Tips:

  • Reserve your boat ahead of time.
  • Don't drink the night before. A hangover and a day spent trying to find your sea legs do not mix. Don't spend a fishing day like a stupid Americano with your head hanging over the edge of the panga.
  • Most pangas are open to the sun. Bring a hat, a light jacket, sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Check to see if food and drinks are included in the price. If not, at the very least bring along something to drink and eat. If you plan to bring beer, you'll also need water. Fishing will make you thirsty.
  • Bring money. The cost of bait is not included in the price. While the skipper will make sure the panga is well-stocked, you must reimburse him. You'll also need to tip him at the end of the trip. Mexican fishermen depend on tips to feed their families.
  • Plan to be dropped off at the marina with your fish anywhere from 2-3 in the afternoon, depending upon how the day went. If your bathing beauty stayed at the hotel to sleep in or catch some rays, she'll need to pick you up at the marina at this time.
  • For a relaxing day of panga fishing in a serene environment, drive to San Jose del Cabo and go fishing at La Playita.

Although the charter fishing companies and boat captains of Cabo stress catch-and-release (particularly with regard to marlin), it is your decision whether to keep your fish or let it go. Remember, you don't have to eat all your catch while you're in Cabo. Buy an inexpensive styrofoam cooler at the market, freeze the fish, place it in the cooler before you check out of your hotel, secure it shut with tape and check it with your airlines. In fact, as I write this article, the smell of dorado grilling on the barbecue is wafting through the air—dorado we caught five months ago while panga fishing in Cabo.
