Is Cabo San Lucas Safe for Tourists?
Is Cabo San Lucas Safe?If you've heard all the recent media reports about the swine flu and drug lords in Mexico (who are on the mainland, not the Baja California Sur Peninsula), you may wonder "is Cabo San Lucas safe?" After all, it would be foolhardy to vacation in a danger zone, no matter how inexpensive it might be. As someone who has vacationed in Cabo San Lucas every year for the past twenty-four years, the answer to your question, "Is Cabo San Lucas safe?" is a resounding yes! Of course I always recommend that you purchase travel insurance whenever you go anywhere away from home, especially when you travel outside the country. Plans available through Travel Guard can provide you with coverage for unexpected medical expenses while on a trip. I started vacationing in Los Cabos when I was in my twenties (almost a quarter of a century ago!) and first traveled down to the Baja California Sur Peninsula with my boyfriend. Soon after, he became my husband and we continued visiting Los Cabos twice per year. Some years later, we had two children and continued the family tradition. I've been in Baja when I've been 8 months pregnant with one child and brought another, my two month old son down for a week. I have never been worried for my safety or more important the safety of my children, while in Los Cabos. Once I had a motorcycle accident (nothing serious), but had to go to the hospital which at that time was nothing more than a dirt floor building with two rooms. Despite the lack of modernization in the building, I received excellent care at no cost to me. Of course, now Los Cabos has a huge, fully-staffed hospital and private doctors who make housecalls. There are specialists and 24-hour walk-in emergency centers in various locations around town. There are also pharmacies on every corner and supermarkets stocked with everything you need. So, again, if you asked me "Is Cabo San Lucas safe?" I can only tell you that my experience and the experience of those who we've met and who have also been staying at our timeshare resort for the past twenty years is that yes, it absolutely is. Fact of the matter is when we're in Mexico, we don't even lock the door to our timeshare, even though we bring our computers, camera and video equipment. Nothing we've brought down has ever been stolen, although there have been some unscrupulous taxi drivers who have tried to rip us off (but that's another story.) Cabo has a fire department and police department and you'll even see the cops directing traffic or walking the streets. Rather than being afraid of any crime being perpetrated by the locals, I'd be much more concerned about the tourists, but truly, we've never had a problem.
My boys have been traveling to Cabo since they were babies and even before in the wombSo again, if you asked me, Is Cabo San Lucas safe, I would say that my twenty-five some years of experience is enough to reassure you that it is. After all, hanging out in paradise, relaxing and soaking in the warm tropical sun brings out the best in all of us. Do take my advice and get travel insurance before you go just in case something happens though. It's definitely worth the peace of mind. So now that you know that Cabo is safe, you can make your vacation plans with confidence.
