Giggling Marlin Bar & Grille: Food & Fun in Cabo

Haven't been to the Giggling Marlin yet? Imagine a marlin stringing up a fisherman to weigh him in and you'll "get" the fun-spirited atmosphere of this famous bar and grille, where adventurous and slightly inebriated customers are hung upside down like marlin at the pier. For $20 bucks or so, a waiter will hang you by your ankles and pour 3 shots of tequila down your throat to the hoots and hollers of your friend, who are capturing this on film, no doubt to blackmail you later. Whether you prefer to watch or participate, it's a Cabo experience that is not to be missed.

Of course, the Giggling Marlin (GM) is also a great place to get a tasty and substantial breakfast, lunch or dinner or party on into the night (they have a well-stocked bar). The GM is one of the original restaurants from the old days, when Los Cabos was just a tiny fishing village and the road in and out of town was nothing more than a long stretch of hard-packed dirt and dust. Back then, in 1986 or so, my husband and I ate at this restaurant for our first time. We were younger then—single with no children, but now we take the kids along. Of course, we make sure to make a clean exit before 8 pm, when things start heating up and the gringos and gringas can get a little wild.

Twenty years of eating at the GM has generated a lot of all-time favorites. My husband's favorite is the Mother of All Burgers named because this burger is huge and definitely not for finicky eaters. (The GM's fries are good too—true-blue American fries.) Personally, when in Mexico, I like to go native, so my favorite is the Burrito of All Burritos, which is super-sized, so I cut it up and share portions with the kids.

Coming soon! A video of yours truly being hung upside down. At the GM, rather than asking, what's the catch of the day, we ask, who's the catch of the day?

There are some great shrimp recipes (and the seafood is guaranteed fresh from the ocean) and of course, breakfast is excellent with its array of mexican and American favorites. Bottom line: you can count on the Giggling Marlin for a good meal and a rip-roaring good time.
