Fly to Cabo: Recommendations for Booking Your Flight

What's it like to fly to Cabo San Lucas? What kind of costs can you expect and how to pick the best airlines to get you there in terms of cost, convenience and comfort (my 3 C's for any worthwhile vacation)? Read this article about our recent trip to Los Cabos and you'll get pointers for your trip.

When we were looking to book a Cabo San Lucas flight, we discovered that much to our dismay, many of the airlines were offering trips that would require us to take one leg of our trip, spend the night at the midway point and continue the second leg of our trip the next day. This was unacceptable since we only had one week for our vacation and since we were taking our teenage sons out of middle school and high school for six school days in order to go on this trip.

As a family who has been traveling to Los Cabos every year for the past twenty four years, we've become accustomed to seeing changes. Back in the old days, we could fly to Cabo San Lucas for about $250 round trip from Reno to San Jose Airport (airport code: SJD) and do so in about 5 hours total.

There are number of airlines that fly to Cabo (including Delta, Mexicana, USAirways and more, depending upon where you live), but we finally settled on USAirways because we could fly to Cabo San Lucas from Reno, connect in Phoenix and arrive in Los Cabos just after check-in time which at our resort is 4 pm.

The total cost for our trip was about $1800.00. This included airline tickets for myself, my husband and two teenage boys, plus all the airport fees and taxes. Of course, we weren't happy that after spending almost $2000 for our tickets, USAirways charged us an additional $25 per checked bag. You'd think after paying so much money our two checked bags (which included a suitcase and my youngest son's skim board) would fly free of charge. Although USAirways said that we could have one carry-on per person, I had three: my rolling computer bag, my camera bag and my purse.

Our Cabo San Lucas flight was uneventful. We had assigned seats (like most flights, you can check-in online and print out your boarding passes 24 hours in advance). Our family took up an entire row on the plane. Drinks were served on board, but there was no meal and there weren't even any snacks, like peanuts or pretzels. If you travel with kids or a husband who is diabetic like mine, you absolutely have to bring snacks. I brought two protein bars for each of us and when we landed in Phoenix, we had just enough time to grab sandwiches at Starbucks for the second leg of our trip. This was just enough food to sustain us until we checked into our hotel.

As seasoned travelers, we recommend that when you fly to Cabo San Lucas, you use an online comparison shopping service like Priceline to book your trip.

This way, you can see which flights the different airlines are offering, what the prices and restrictions are and select the flight that best serves your family's needs. Be sure to watch out for flights that require you to spend the night between the two legs of your trip if you can't fly direct. Although this may work just fine for families who have young children, most of us want to get the traveling part over and only use up one day of our vacation to do so.

Another excellent online service that we have used in the past and which we actually used to fly to Cabo San Lucas on this most recent trip is CheapCarribean.com.

After booking with them, we were able to go to the website of the airline we chose, input our passport numbers and print out our boarding passes in advance.

By the way, when we landed at SJD airport, after going through customs, the exchange rate for US dollars to pesos was 1:11.14. Unlike other money exchange services, there is no service fee at the airport. Although Mexican people will happily take American dollars, it pays to pay with pesos to eliminate confusion and to get more bang for your buck.
