Description of Cabo San Lucas - The Area, the People & the Culture

Description of Cabo San Lucas - Cabo San Lucas is a beautiful resort city located at the tip of the Baja California Sur Peninsula where the Pacific Ocean meets the sparkling turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez.

Set in an incredible (and surprising!) environment of lush tropical foilage and desert scrub (including huge saguaro cactus), Cabo San Lucas has a unique charm especially when coupled with the warm hospitality of the Mexican people. Since the weather is almost always temperate, as long as you're accompanying people you get along with, vacationing in Los Cabos practically guarantees a good time.

How do I know? If you've read a few pages on my site, you know that my family and I have been vacationing in Cabo San Lucas yearly for the past twenty years. The reason we return every year, rather than going someplace else? We love Cabo, the culture and its people.

Description of Cabo - The Area

The word "Los Cabos" refers to the area of the Baja California Sur Peninsula which includes San Jose del Cabo (where you'll fly into the airport), San Jose del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas and Todos Santos. Also, the expanse of beachfront property that extends between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas is known as the Corridor. Here, you will find many luxurious resorts.

For more detailed views of the area, see our Map Cabo San Lucas

Description of Cabo San Lucas - a Little History

When my husband and I first traveled to Cabo San Lucas back in 1986, it was just a little fishing village that was accessible via a dirt highway, if you could call it that.. Back in those days, one of our favorite things to do after a day of fishing was to sit on a stool at a roach coach in the marina parking lot and eat fish tacos prepared by a mexican woman named Morena. They were the best fish tacos in the world.

Cabo San Lucas bay One year, we returned and Morena (which means brown-skinned) was gone. We never found out what happened to her, but in her place, many luxury hotels, restaurants and shopping centers were built in the area and obscuring (or not, depending upon your view) the marina and the Cabo San Lucas Bay. were the luxurious hotels, retaurants and shopping centers that obscure or complement (depending upon your viewpoint) the marina and the Cabo San Lucas Bay.

Description of Cabo San Lucas - The Culture & People

Mexican folk dancers Although we have more detailed descriptions of the culture and people on this site, suffice it to say that the mexican people are warm and hospitable. While there will always be exceptions to the rule, this has been our overall experience.

Since the mexican people are extremely family-oriented, they love children and treat each other with respect. In all our decades of traveling to Mexico, we have never been victims of crime or witnessed one. As a family, we feel safe when vacationing in Mexico.

Description of Cabo San Lucas - Things to Do

While you're vacationing, you'll find that there are many things to do in Cabo Mexico. Our family likes to fish, so we always manage to work in a Cabo San Lucas sport fishing trip or two. Fishing is expensive, so we can't go every day.

In our years of traveling to Cabo San Lucas, we've caught our fair share of marlin (which we always release), dorado, tuna, roosterfish and more. Due to Cabo's unique marine environment where two oceans meet, Cabo is known for its fishing and has been dubbed the Marlin Capital of the World.

Although no one in my family is a golfer, Cabo is home to six championship golf courses and is truly a golfers paradise. In addition to water sports, a pirate ship, an arcade, movie theater, you can also swim with the dolphins in Cabo San Lucas.
