Cabo Wabo Tequila - A Tequila Drinking Guide
Cabo Wabo Tequila is Sammy Hagar's private label brand. As the proprietor of the most famous cantina and nightclub in Cabo San Lucas, Hagar was looking for a fine tequila to serve at his cantina and call his own. After many years of searching, he found a family-run business in Jalisco that had been making its renowned tequila since 1937. Cabo Wabo Reposado was born.
Like all tequilas, Cabo Wabo tequila comes from the blue agave plant (a spikey -looking succulent that grows in "The Tequila Region" of Jalisco. There is actually a town in a Jalisco named "Tequila" which is where the liquor gets its name). The juices from the hearts of the blue agave are fermented, aged and distilled into tequila. Native people (remember native people are indigenous to Mexico, not the spanish, who were the conquistadors) say that drinking tequila is like "hablar con Dios"—talking with God. The reason for this is that unlike alcohol which is a psychotic drug (many of you know this from your drinking buddies angry, erratic behavior), tequila is a hallucinogenic. Rather than splitting your psyche in two, tequila mellows and soothes.

First, Cabo Wabo tequila or any other fine reposado must be served at room temperature. Serve blanco or reposado in a "caballito" (pronounced ca-ba-yeto). Anejo should be served in a snifter, so its bouquet can be fully enjoyed. Sip it slowly, savoring its complexity. Lesser tequilas may be gulped. (If you really want to gulp down a tequila that costs about $20 per shot, that's up to you.)
When most people think about drinking tequila, they think of biting a lime and gulping throat-burning liquid from a salt-encrusted glass, but this is just one way to drink tequila and is probably an image created by cheap tequila and Hollywood. As connossieurs of fine tequila, my husband and I, like to drink it straight and sip it slowly. This way, one caballito is all we want. Occasionally, we add a splash of pomegranate juice to heighten the flavor.
Cabo Wabo tequila is served at the Cabo Wabo Cantina and other tequila bars in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. There are many tequila bars which have over one hundred types of tequilas in stock. Panchos is another bar/restaurant that is famous for its selection of tequilas. If you walk the streets of Cabo San Lucas, you'll find the occasional tequila tasting bar where you can try before you buy. By the way, you don't have to travel to Cabo to buy Cabo Wabo tequila. I've seen it in the United States, most recently at Costco.
Tequila is famous the world over for its unique taste and as a mixer in margaritas. A fine tequila, like Cabo Wabo Tequila, is so smooth and lacking in a burn effect that it can be sipped on its own. This is a sign of the best tequilas.
Although most everyone has heard of tequila, but few know how to drink it properly.
