Cabo Sport Fishing: Sport Fishing in Cabo San Lucas Mexico
Cabo sport fishing is among the best in the world. You can catch fish pretty much all year round in Los Cabos, but certain fish are more plentiful during certain seasons. Although our guide below is by no means a comprehensive list (there are over 500 varieties of ocean life in the area), these are descriptions of the some of the fish most commonly caught in Baja waters.
If you have caught one of the fish described below and have a photo of yourself with the fish, we'd love to post it on our site. If you have a great-warrior-fishing-story or a funny one, that's even better. Please use the Contact Us link to share your story (and forever memorialize yourself and your story about the-one-you-caught or the-one-who-got-away on these pages) and we will tell you how to submit your photo for this page.
If you catch any of the fish below and do not plan to eat it, please consider practicing catch-and-release, particularly with marlin whose numbers were dwindling in Los Cabos until the Cabo sport fishing community took action. Rather than hanging a dead trophy on the wall, take a picture.

Cabo Sport Fishing Guide
Dorado - this beautiful fish is easily recognized by its snub nose. (Bulls have the bigger noses). An acrobat by nature, the fish is known to jump and leap in the air. Dorados can grow up to 6 ft long and weigh just shy of 90 pounds and can be caught year-round.
Grouper - a scrumptious white meat fish. Grows up to six feet long and weighs 200 pounds.
Working hard to reel that marlin in.
Roosterfish - The roosterfish, like the yellowfin tuna, is a tough contender in the sport of ocean fishing. Unlike the tuna, they're not that tasty, but some people like them. Rather than take home a roosterfish you do not plan to eat, observe the practice of catch-and-release. Rooster fish can be as long as 5 feet and weigh just over 100 pounds.
Sailfish - like the dorado, the sailfish is an acrobat. Okay for eating, especially when you have it smoked by one of the local smokehouses. Can grow over 10 feet long and weigh over 100 pounds. Caught March through December.

The struggle between man and fish is over. The marlin is brought to the side of the boat and then released.
Striped Marlin - talk about a fighter! If you've never caught a marlin before, you're in for the battle of your life. I'll never forget when I reeled in my first after what seemed like a lifetime. My chest muscles, biceps and forearms were so pumped, I exclaimed to my husband, "Now, I know what it feels like to be a man!" What an exciting battle and what a great chance for you (or your wife or teen) to find out what you're made of. Highly recommended as the perfect bonding experience with your teen.
You can also catch black and blue marlin in Cabo San Lucas. They are typically caught June through November.
In the Cabo San Lucas area, marlin typically weigh less that 280 pounds and be about 10 feet long. Of course, some marlin weigh up to 700 pounds. Rather than keep your marlin as a prize, take a photo or a video and practice Cabo's conservationist policy of catch-and-release. Marlin can be caught year-round.
If your Cabo sport fishing plans don't include eating the fish, please practice catch-and-release
In terms of eating, marlin is very rich; some people like it and some don't. Although we've caught many a marlin, we usually don't take it home. The one time we did, we had it smoked. It was okay, but I found myself wishing that we had left it to live out its life in the sparkling Baja waters.
Yellowfin Tuna - we're talking yummy! This deep water fish is a tough contender once you hook it on your line. Prepare yourself for battle. Can be up to 6.5 feet long and weigh over 400 pounds. Can be caught year-round.
Yellowtail - another delicious fish, in fact, it's one of my personal favorites. Right now, I'm thinking sashimi. Although yellowtail can be a challenge to reel in, they are smaller than many of the other fish you can catch in Cabo San Lucas Mexico. They can grow up to 5 ft long and weigh up to 80 pounds. Typically, the fish are smaller though. Usually caught February through June.

Wahoo - the biggest wahoo ever caught was hooked in Mexico and weighed in at 158 pounds. Typically seen in Cabo San Lucas from May through January. Good eating.
