Cabo San Lucas Transportation: Getting Around

One thing you'll want to know before leaving on your vacation is how Cabo San Lucas transportation costs will figure into your vacation budget. Since I am writing this from Los Cabos, I can give you an idea of how much money you'll need to get around.

When we arrived at the San Jose Airport, we hired a taxi to drive us to Los Cabos. With the new highway, the trip is even faster than it's been in the past. Still, we were a little floored by the exorbitant charge of $85 for a 20 minute taxi ride to town. Of course, our "taxi" was really an air conditioned Surburban with plenty of room for the four of us. (We could have reduced our Cabo San Lucas Transportation costs somewhat by sharing a van with other vacationers.)

The reason the taxi costs are so high is that the taxis are owned and controlled by one individual who has the luxury of setting his prices.

One way that we recouped our costs a little bit was by asking the taxi driver to take us to Costco before dropping us off at our timeshare at Club Cascadas. Although Costco can't be more than a 5 minute drive from our hotel, the cost to go there is $20 round trip. This way, we cut out that $20, arrived with plenty of food and water and didn't have to go shopping the next day. We did give the driver a nice tip since he waited for us outside Costco for about 45 minutes as we got all the food and drink that we needed for our stay.

Since rental cars in Mexico are quite expensive (it cost us around $125 to rent the van below for 24 hours), you will probably walk or take a taxi to most destinations in town. Of course, this depends on where you're staying and where you want to go. Since Cascadas is right off the highway in town, it only costs us $6 to take a cab downtown and $10 to take a cab to the marina, where we went sportfishing today. cabo san lucas transportation When we dropped our rental car off at the airport, the agent reiterated what we already knew: that the best way to rent a car is to do so online BEFORE your trip. Don't do it at the airport and don't do it at your hotel resort. Renting online before your trip will save you money and will also make sure that you understand the terms of the agreement by using a service that explains what you need to know in English. Reserve your rental car by using the service we use every year to get the best possible deal:

no one deals like we do!

The best thing about having a rental car for your Cabo San Lucas transportation is that you don't have to deal with taxis and it's easy to get around. Parking is not usually a problem and you can take day trips to lovely places like Todos Santos, San Jose del Cabo and La Paz.

cabo san lucas transportation Another transportation option is the Bici-Taxi which is a bicycle-powered taxi (which seats two). It's an open-air option that is perfect if you're not in a hurry. The cost of the bici-taxi depends on where you are when you hire your ride and how far you want go. Since the taxi drivers work their quads and calf muscles hard, a 10% tip is a must.

Obviously, these cab rides can add up quickly since the prices that I'm giving you are for a one-way trip. Still it's less than the $125 per day that a rental car can cost (if you make the mistake of renting it in Mexico To rent before you go, click on car rental

If you like to hoof it though and you stay in town, you can really cut down your Cabo San Lucas transportation costs by walking to and from your destinations.

As always, before going on any trip, be sure to purchase travel insurance with Travel Guard to provide you with coverage for unexpected medical expenses while on a trip.
