Cabo San Lucas Sport Fishing: Everything You Need to Know

Cabo San Lucas sport fishing ...

... every year, our family goes on a fishing trip. There's nothing in the world quite like it. With the teeming marine life at the point where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez, the fishing is fantastic. On our last fishing trip, in addition to reeling in twelve dorado, we spotted sea lions sunning their bloated bodies on the flat rocks near The Arch, a school of dolphins swimming at the bow of our boat and four pairs of grey whales, jumping and frolicking in the open waters.

As sports fishing trips go, it exceeded our imagination.

On a typical good day, a charter boat can bring back marlin (black, blue or striped), sailfish, swordfish, wahoo, yellowfin tuna and yellowtail. (Check out the different colored flags flying at the stern of the boat to figure out what was caught that day—see photos below.) If you like to eat what you catch, then you'll have the makings of a delicious meal. If not, kindly observe the area's policy of catch-and-release.

Although Cabo San Lucas sport fishing is good all year round, there are better times of the year to catch certain types of fish. Some fish can be caught year round, like dorado, yellowfin tuna and striped marlin. Others are caught only during certain months. For example, blue and black marlin are seen June through November. Yellowtail and swordfish can be caught February through June, sailfish, March through December, while wahoo are seen typically May through January.

In this section, you'll find essential advice gleaned from our twenty-or-so years of experience fishing the deep blue waters of Los Cabos.
