When selecting a resort for your vacation, you will be choosing among the finest in the world. Although forty years ago, Los Cabos was a small fishing village accessible only to the rich and famous (who could afford to charter a private plane), today it is a bustling vacation spot with something for everyone. Whether you're a sports fisherman, a sun worshipper, a family with young children or a couple on their twenty fifth wedding anniversary or honeymoon, you're practically guaranteed beautiful weather and a relaxing, fun-filled stay in paradise.

When selecting a Cabo San Lucas resort, consider these important things:

Will you be spending a lot of time at the marina or shopping or eating in the center of town? If so, be aware that cab rides can get expensive. While many people spend all their time at a full service vacation resort, it's more fun to explore the culture and points of interest. Although you may feel safer eating at your hotel, you may eventually want more choices. Some of the most delicious and authentic meals I've had in Los Cabos are at the little out-of-the-way sidewalk restaurants. If you plan to explore the city, consider staying closer to it, rather than outside of town.

Do your family members have diverse interests? If you all love sports fishing and that's what you came to do, there will be no conflicts. In my family, we have varied interests. If this describes your family, select a Cabo San Lucas resort that offers a variety of activities. For instance, your kids may be into water sports, your husband may want to go horseback riding on the beach or fishing, while you may want to relax in the sun, paint ceramics on the beach and take a class on making authentic Mexican guacamole. If you have young children, make sure the resort has a daycare. This way, you can spend certain days engaging in child-centered family activities and a day or two alone with your spouse.

Does the Cabo San Lucas vacation resort have an on-site rental car agency? Although most people get around Los Cabos by taxi, you may want to rent a car for a few days to take day trips to Buena Vista, San Jose del Cabo, Todos Santos or La Paz. If you've never been to Cabo before, these trips are worth your time and money. You will have an easier time taking trips if you can pick up and drop off the car at your resort. If you are looking to buy a vacation home, then you'll definitely want to rent a car and drive around. Of course, you can also get a real estate agent to drive you around.

Cabo San Lucas resorts: does it have an on-site store? This is especially important if you have children. You never know when you might need some Motrin, Band-Aids, cough syrup, sunscreen or a quart of milk. Like all hotel stores, the prices will be higher, but it will save you a trip (and taxi fare) to town.

Does the resort have a club house? Many Cabo San Lucas vacation spots do not have televisions in the rooms, but they do have flat screens in the club house where vacationers can congregate, catch up on the news and watch sporting events. Some resorts, like the one I stay in, play a movie every night for children.
The club house may also have a pool table and board games like checkers and chess.

If you are a person who simply must check their email on vacation, then make sure your resort has internet access. Although there are internet cafes where you can get online and check your email, it is easier to do so at your resort. While on vacation, think convenience. You want to unwind and relax, not stress out because you can't get online.

Finally, if you intend to make your vacation into a retreat, make sure your Cabo San Lucas resort has a full service salon where you can get a facial, a massage or a pedicure.
