Cabo San Lucas Fishing: Marlin Fishing At Its Best

As a family of amateur anglers, we consider Cabo San Lucas fishing the best. And, of course, we're not alone. The sport fishing industry is big business here because Los Cabos offers some of the best fishing in the world with some of the highest paid fishing tournament prizes. Where two oceans collide, there is bound to be plenty of marine life and Baja waters do not disappoint—there are over 500 varieties of ocean life, including sailfish, swordfish, yellowfin tuna, dorado and blue, blue and striped marlin.

Los Cabos is the Marlin Capital of the World

In the years that we've been traveling down to Cabo, we've caught our fair share of marlin. There's nothing like the excitement of the sport fishing experience because it's you against the fish. (Of course the boat and captain assist, so while it's not a true one-on-one, the reeling is up to you.)

So what does it feel like ... catching a marlin?

The excitement begins when the reel begins to click and whine and you know you have a marlin. Once hooked, the fish dives deep. When it finally stops to rest, you'll reel in hard, your forearms and biceps pumped, your heart surging with adrenalin. With the ocean spray in your face and the sun on your neck, the timeless struggle between man and fish begins. And when I say timeless, I mean it can take hours to reel in the fish, but once you've brought it in and seen its irridescent colors, it's best to return it to its ocean home. This is the policy of catch-and-release, especially for marlin whose dwindling numbers led to the policy.

Chartering a Fishing Boat

You can charter a Cabo San Lucas fishing trip for as little as $500 for a charter boat. The number of people in your party determines the size of the boat and, of course, the size of the boat determines the price. Make sure to find out if lunch is included. It's usually not. If not, you can buy sandwiches the night before or do some early shopping at the marina (there are plenty of eateries open before 6 am that provide sandwiches). Make sure to bring along plenty of water. Fishing all day on salty ocean waters will leave your mouth cracked and dry.

A great idea is to make your Cabo San Lucas fishing trip into a bonding experience for the whole family. Any fish caught that day can be cleaned on the boat by the crew and cooked that evening, either by you or a local chef. There's nothing like teaching a child or teenager how to fish, especially when their efforts are rewarded that evening at dinner with fish they caught themselves.

We recommend that you charter your boat before you arrive in Cabo, just as you would purchase your airline tickets in advance.
