Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report - Sport Fishing in Paradise
Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report - nothing like a day in paradise. My husband, children and I were up before dawn for a day of sport fishing in Los Cabos, Mexico. We gathered our stuff for the trip: sunglasses, light jackets, sunscreen, video camera (lucky for you—you get to see the footage) and a cooler full of water, sodas, sandwiches and fruit and headed for the marina. Stopping off for two mochas and two hot chocolates at Senor Greenburg's at the waterfront, we lined up at the access gate and showed our receipt to the guard who gave us entry to the dock. Since the surf had been rough for the past two days due to a hurricane on the other side of the Sea of Cortez, we were a little concerned for our safety and whether our fishing dollars ($500 for a family of four for a six hour trip) would be well spent.
Once on board the sport fishing charter boat, we settled into comfortable spots. Under a clear blue sky, dotted with cawing sea gulls, we cut through the waters of Cabo San Lucas Bay. Gliding past Lover's Beach which was deserted in the early morning hours, the captain idled the engine, so we snap photos of the seals, barking and lounging on the flat rock that was their home. As we rounded the Arch at the Baja tip (where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean), the water became rough and choppy.

Although we were being splashed and jerked around as the boat sped through Pacific waters, practically flying from one wave crest to the next, we could tell it was going to be a lovely day (otherwise, there might have been a gloomy tone to this Cabo San Lucas fishing report). The first sign that it was going to be an awesome sport fishing day, were two grey whales jumping and frolicking in the distance. Unfortunately, I was so awestruck by the sight, I had to see it with my own two eyes, so I put the camera down. This was the first of three grey whale sightings that day and it wasn't even whale season!
Everybody picked a comfy spot on the sport fishing charter boat. If you're tired, you can also sleep below the deck.
Next, we saw a school of dolphins. Any good Cabo San Lucas sport fisherman knows that where there are dolphins, there are tuna. It was then that we heard the whine and click of the reel as a fish took the line.
Sometimes we had two lines going at the same time. Our boys, who are ten and thirteen had a blast, waiting until they saw the tip of the reel release a bit and then reeling fast and furiously to bring in the fish. My husband was the fishing sage and instructor, doling out wise advice about sport fishing and creating an irrevocable bond with the boys in the process. I was the chronicler of this Cabo San Lucas fishing report, however, at one point, since the fish were so abundant, the boys insisted I reel in a fish. (Over the years, I've caught many a marlin and dorado and was content to take video and photos.)
Miguel, the first mate, my sons, Dakotah and Colt and their biggest catch of the day and the wise old fisherman, my husband, Larry.
In terms of sport fishing, I dubbed it Dorado Day. All told, my husband, two boys and I caught twelve dorado. Of the twelve, we kept ten. One was small and so we threw it back and another one was quite large, so we gave it to the captain and his first mate who cleaned and fileted the fish on board. Bookmark this page and come back later, as I will edit and post our Cabo San Lucas fishing report video in which you may learn some things you didn't know about sport fishing.
Miguel raises the fishing flags to indicate which fish we caught.
At the end of the day, we were wind-whipped and salt-encrusted, but grateful. We gave the captain and first mate (Miguel and Miguel) a generous $100 tip because we were so pleased with how the day went. A tip is necessary and expected. Remember, the skill of the captain and crew is largely responsible for your ability to catch fish and your safety is in their hands, so reward them well.
Miguel y Miguel - the two Miguels made sure we had an awesome fishing day.
That's it for this Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report. Here's hoping that your next sport fishing trip to Los Cabos will be as beautiful, enjoyable and productive.
