Cabo San Lucas Fishing Charters - A Great Day on the Sea of Cortez

If you're looking into booking Cabo San Lucas fishing charters, then you need to know how to negotiate a good deal (Mexicans love to negotiate) and you need to understand the current state of affairs in Los Cabos. Since I am currently on the Baja Peninsula, enjoying my vacation with my family and since we just went fishing today, you might want to take some notes.

Cabo San Lucas is like everywhere else right now: the economy is depressed. This means that in certain situations, there are good deals to be had. If you're on a budget and most of us are, but want to sneak in a few day-long Cabo San Lucas fishing charters, then you'll want to hear what I have to say.

cabo san lucas fishing charters We just returned from a deep fishing trip. We went out on Enrique's La Paloma I. (Of course, while booking the fishing excursion in Enrique's office, we had to put up with his comments and questions about whether or not we had put on weight and if our hair used to be longer. I think Enrique's obsessed with weight because he himself has grown quite rotund.) When I first spotted the boat, I wasn't exactly thrilled because there wasn't much seating up top ... only the two captain's chairs for fishing. This meant that during the trip the two of us who weren't lucky enough to be seated in the fishing chairs were in the way. If you wanted to sit, you could perch atop the cooler that would hold all the fish that we caught that day.

Anyway here's our story:

Our Cabo San Lucas fishing charter started off all wrong. Even though we set two alarms, somehow we overslept. Fortunately, we had our receipt from the night before and had the concierge call the charter company to tell them that we would be late. They asked us if we would like to postpone the fishing trip until tomorrow (something that would never happen at the height of tourist season), but we said no.

The representative for Enrique's met us at Plaza Bonita where his office is located and then paid for a cab to take us to the marina. I've already told you about my initial impressions about the boat and the lack of seating. The captain, Juan, introduced himself and we were on our way, off to live some great fishing stories that we could tell and retell later.

First though, we had to pay for our fishing licenses. For a one-day fishing license, the cost was $14 USD per person. So times 4, the total cost was $54. Since I wasn't planning on fishing (I've caught plenty of marlin, dorado, tuna, etc in my day) and wanted instead to video and photograph my husband and boys during their fishing/male-bonding experience, I asked if I had to buy a license. Apparently, it doesn't matter whether you fish or not, it is mandatory for everyone on the boat to purchase a license. The cost of the bait (we chose 12 bait fish which ended up being more than enough) was included in the $400 we paid to go out for a full day on one of the lesser known Cabo San Lucas fishing charters.

Since we hoped that our teenage boys would get a chance to catch and release a marlin, we started off the day by asking the Cabo San Lucas charters captain to look for marlin. Although the deep waters of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean abound with striped, blue and black marlin, this is only because the marlin are protected by Mexican law. Catch and release is highly encouraged, although you can still bring your marlin in if you want. In fact at the end of the day, we watch a vacationing sportfisherman pose next to his 125 pound striped marlin (a baby, really) at the dock.
