Cabo Mexico (a.k.a. Cabo San Lucas) is a uniquely beautiful vacation spot situated at Lands End that offers a variety of fun activities. While the number one reason people come to Cabo is to fish (either on a sport fishing charter or a panga), there's plenty for non-anglers to do.
If you're into water sports, Cabo offers parasailing, jet skiing, snorkeling, wind surfing and scuba diving (Check out the top scuba dive spots. With the incredible marine life found at Land's End (where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez), you'll want to bring along an underwater camera and take lots of photos.
Cabo Mexico offers minibike rentals so you and your family can zip around town. Watch out for all the traffic though. If you like quad runners, taking a guided tour along the beach and off-road to the old lighthouse makes an interesting trek for the entire family. If you're young lovers or newlyweds, consider a romantic sunset horseback ride along the beach.
For the golfer, Cabo Mexico boasts plenty of green. It has six championship golf courses, three of which were designed by golf pro, Jack Nicklaus. There's nothing like golfing in paradise.
For the avid shopper, Cabo will keep you very busy. Boutiques dot the town and the side streets. There are strip malls and the newly built and incredibly luxuriously appointed mall—Puerto Paraiso—which is the best of Cabo San Lucas shopping. If you have kids in tow, you can shop til you drop, while the hubby and kids play the huge selection of video games or go bowling at the arcade, Recorcholis, which is located on the top floor of the mall. There's also a multiplex cinema.
While it's fun to do activities that engage the entire family, sometimes it's important to do something for yourself, like treating yourself and your spouse to a Cabo San Lucas massage.
If you're looking for handmade products, the local people sell them up and down the beach, in various outdoor areas throughout the city and at the marina (see photo to the left). This is where your haggling skills should kick in. When the locals tell you the price for an item, they expect you to make a counter offer. Make it lower, but not insulting. This back-and-forth game gives shopping an extra thrill.
Another fun Cabo activity is to take a day trip. San Jose del Cabo which is a quaint little town is located just forty minutes north (near the airport). About two hours northwest from Cabo Mexico is Todos Santos (the site of the infamous Hotel California from The Eagles song by the same name).
If you want to cruise the pristine waters of Los Cabos, you can go on a sunset dinner cruise, a trip to Lover's Beach (which is near El Arco—"The Arch" at Land's End), a glass bottom boat or even take the kids on a pirates' ship. Or plan to visit all of the lovely Cabo San Lucas beaches.
A fun thing for couples or families to do is swim with the dolphins in Cabo San Lucas. Nothing compares to this once-in-a-lifetime experience and Cabo Dolphins has a package for everyone from age 5 and up. If you're into heart-pounding expeditions, check out all the fun activities offered by Cabo Adventures such as the Safari, Americas Cup or Canopy Tour.
Another experience not to be missed is Baja whale watching. If you're in Cabo during January through March when the grey whales migrate to Cabo to give birth to their calves, you simply must go on an excursion to watch them frolic and breach in the warm ocean waters.
If nothing sounds good to you so far and you're just not sure what to do in Cabo consider taking a tour of the Baja outback. There's much to explore and learn about the desert flora and fauna.
Nightlife in Cabo Mexico is on a par with other tourist towns. Cabo Wabo cantina—Sammy Hagar's nightclub—is the most famous bar in town. Cabo Wabo boasts a huge selection of tequila, some of which is the finest in the world, including Sammy's own Cabo Wabo Tequila. Word to the wise—the expensive stuff is s-m-o-o-t-h, unlike the tequila you've drank before. Once you start drinking it and experience the subtle high of tequila (which unlike alcohol is a psychotropic drug), you won't settle for the cheap stuff. While you're there—if you're fortunate—Hagar might even show up to perform.
Check your Cabo hotel—it is likely that there are performances at sunset on the beach on certain nights, like the one that we saw at our hotel below:
Other places to visit include the Giggling Marlin Bar & Restaurant (where the customers, not the marlin, are hung upside down—perfect for snapping a photo of an inebriated friend or relative you might want to blackmail later!)
