Cabo Golf - Golf Course Guide to Cabo San Lucas Mexico

Before you read on, I have to issue a disclaimer—I am not an expert. In twenty years of traveling to Cabo, I have visited each course, but do not play. Due to my awareness of this handicap, I've gone to great lengths to make sure you get the information you're looking for. Okay, down to business. The game, that is. Although there is probably plenty of business that is transacted during or after a round of Cabo golf, here, we'll focus on the pleasure.

Cabo del Sol

Cabo del Sol features two courses: an ocean and a desert course. This resort has been designed to accomodate four courses.

Cabo del Sol Ocean Course

This Nicklaus-designed Cabo golf course is located along the shore of the Sea of Cortez, features 18 holes and is noted for the last three holes. It is a challenging course (particularly, the 15th hole—158 yards, par 3) and is a tournament-level course. Nicklaus himself calls it "the most spectacular golf course property on earth" (he's designed three golf courses in Los Cabos). Since the course borders the ocean, gray whales can be spotted during winter.

Cabo del Sol Desert Course

In addition to the ocean course, Cabo Del Sol features a desert course which was designed Weiskopf. This course winds around the desert terrain and is considered challenging for all levels of play.

Prices to play the ocean course range from $350.00 at the top of the season (October through June) to $220.00 during the off-season (July through September). Prices for the desert course range from $165.00 to $220.

Querencia

This is a private course designed by Fazio that takes advantage of the changing elevation and desert fauna. The word "querencia" means "sanctuary" and that is what this course will ultimately be—a private sanctuary for just 350 members. In designing this par-72 course, Fazio followed the lay of the land and created a flowing layout that is reflective of the unique Baja terrain. Be sure to spend time at the beautiful clubhouse that overlooks the Sea of Cortez.

According to a friend of mine who is a seasoned golfer, the first nine holes at Querencia are exciting to play.

Raven Golf Club

Cabo golf at it's best, this course was designed by Dye and features vistas of the turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez and the only fairway view of The Arch at Land's End. Nine lakes dot the lush green fairway, along with Palo Blanco and Torote trees and towering Cardon cacti. It is the mexican way to respect the lay of the land and this is exactly what this Cabo golf course does—it flows with the terrain—around the trees, cacti and lakes.

Open to the public. Daily rate as of this writing (Sept. 2006) is about $100, except during the height of the tourist season (from October to June) when it climbs to $160.00.

Los Cabos Golf Resort

This Cabo golf course is the winner of several design and hospitality awards. In terms of style, it has the feel of a sprawling Hacienda with a lush rolling green, cobbled walkways, arches, towering columns and ornamental wrought iron. It is classic old Mexico at its best. A view of the Sea of Cortez and mountains in the distance makes for a relaxing day in the sun.

Palmilla Golf

The Jack Nicklaus-designed course at the One & Only Palmilla Resort is one of three Nicklaus-commissioned Cabo golf courses. The scenery is absolutely spectacular (picture cactus dotting the Sea of Cortez which stretches into the horizon) and the course itself is quite challenging, even for a pro. There are 27 holes with the 14th considered to be the most difficult. Although The Palmilla has been around awhile, its diversity and breathtaking beautiful makes for a fun day of competitive golf.

Prices vary from $269.50 at the height of the holiday season (November thru December) to $165 during the off season. The Palmilla has Callaways clubs available for rent.

Cabo Real

Located at the Melia Cabo Real Hotel (along "The Corridor"—between the San Jose del Cabo airport and Cabo San Lucas), this Robert Trent Jones designed course has 18 holes which offer challenges for every level. Adams golf clubs are available for rent at this course.

Prices range $180 during the off-season (July through the middle of October) to $280 during the height of the season.

Mayan Palace Los Cabos Golf Course

Designed by Schjetnan & Finger, this 3153 yard, 9 hole golf course can be played twice to get in 18 holes. It was built by Fonatur and is perfect for beginners.
