Cabo Fishing: How to Book the Best Cabo San Lucas Fishing Charter Boat

Cabo fishing is unmatched. That's why it attracts experienced and newbie anglers from all around. Referred to as "The Marlin and Billfish Capital of the World," as proof of its nickname, each October Cabo San Lucas hosts the biggest game fishing competition in the world—Bisbee's Black and Blue Jackpot Tournament—with a purse totaling over one million dollars.

What a lot of fisherman don't realize is that Cabo San Lucas is also known for its policy of catch and release. The locals encourage this to preserve the marine ecosystem and ensure that their bustling little tourist city remains the fishing capital it is. To support this end, the local sports fishing charter boat companies release more than 1000 marlin each year. Although catch-and-release is encouraged, you can take home your catch, but keep in mind that even though a 75 pound striped marlin may seem big (especially, when you're reeling it in), it really is just a baby.

Cabo fishing has a lot to offer everyone, from the skilled deep sea angler to the extreme sports fanatic. You can book a sports fishing charter boat, a panga or for the true thrill seekers among us, rent a kayak.

Since fishing is excellent all year round (even in the colder months, temperatures seldom dip below the seventies), any time of the year is the perfect time for your trip.

What can you catch on your Cabo fishing trip? The list is long and quite exciting: sailfish, skipjack, dorado, yellow fin tuna, wahoo, yellow tail, blue, black and striped marlin.

Before you book your Cabo fishing trip, here are a few tips:

  • Book the charter boat before you leave on your trip.
  • Check out our recommendations.
  • Fishing is expensive, so split the cost with friends.
  • If you did not plan ahead, hang out by the marina and watch thecharter boats come in. Talk to the tourists as they leave the boats and ask them how their day went, what they caught and what they thought of the captain and crew. When in Mexico, always take recommendations.
