Baja California Fishing – Types of Sports Fishing Along the Baja Peninsula
Baja California FishingCabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo on the southern tip of the Baja California Sur Peninsula are known for having the best fishing in the world. Whether you are just beginning in the sport of fishing or are an experienced professional, Baja California fishing will provide you with plenty of opportunities to catch a wide range of fish.Fishing Cabo is so amazing because it's the crossroads for migratory fish like the marlin. It's also home to a number of different schools of fish which reside in the waters around Cabo year round. Cabo is also home to numerous fishing contests such as the Bisbee's Black and Blue Marlin Tournament which has a million dollar purse for the lucky winner, the airports are used to seeing 9 foot rods and large ice chests go through. This is great, especially in today’s climate, where in most airports this equipment would earn you a trip to a police station and an interrogation. But with Baja California fishing such equipment is commonplace.
Cabo is also one of the very few places in the world where fishing enthusiasts are able to enjoy a range of types of fishing. Here, you’ll be able to partake in fly fishing, spinning, bottom fishing, and deep sea fishing. Fly fishing involves the use of artificial bait which is usually made of feathers or hair and is done in shallow water. Light graphite or modified low water boats can be used in addition to simply standing in the surf. Because of the continental talus just off the coast, fly fishing Cabo involves standing or boating in shallow water and reeling in from deeper. Billfish are the most commonly sought after fish for this particular style. Spinning, also known as light tackle fishing, involves being in water that’s about 9 feet deep and using resistant graphite or polycarbonate rods with larger lures than for fly fishing. You can spin fish from the beach or use a panga (a Mexican skiff about 22 feet long which is powered by an outboard motor). One of the most popular spin fishing areas is Gordos Banks just a few miles west of San Jose del Cabo. Another type of Baja California fishing available is bottom fishing. This is a form of deep water fishing so the boat will drop anchor to remain steady. Weights will need to be added to the line to help it actually sink and the bait is usually small, imitation fish. Finally, one of the most popular forms of fishing Cabo is deep sea fishing. You’ll need some special equipment such as sounding devices to help you locate the schools of fish and heavier rods and line. One of the most commonly used methods is trolling where the boat coasts along at about 6 knots keeping the line relatively close to the surface. This is the technique most marlin pursuers use. There are over 500 species of fish which either live or pass through the Cabo waters which also helps to account for the popularity of Baja California fishing. Here, you’ll see red snapper, yellowtail, jack crevalle, marlin, billfish, sailfish, and much, much more…so break out your tackle and head to Cabo!
